How should New Zealand's schools respond to the growing use of AI?

Research shows that most students and teachers are using artificial intelligence, but our policy frameworks are not doing enough to guide this use. The Helen Clark Foundation is undertaking a significant policy research project, funded by Hiraya Ventures, on how New Zealand's primary and secondary education system should adapt to the growing accessibility of AI tools.
Gather research and evidence
Bring together research from New Zealand and overseas, interviews with key stakeholders and experts, and case studies from relevant jurisdictions in other countries.
Map the landscape
Outline the different uses of AI in primary and secondary education, highlight opportunities and risks, describe the current policy landscape in New Zealand, identify gaps, and examine how other countries, states and school districts are responding to these issues.
Make practical recommendations
Make concrete, practical recommendations to the government on how New Zealand can best maximise the opportunities and minimise the risks of AI in education.
