Helen Clark Foundation submission on Crimes (Virginity Testing Practices) Amendment Bill

The Crimes (Virginity Testing Practices) Amendment Bill recently passed its first reading. Our report on Addressing Sexual Violence in New Zealand highlighted the harms caused by 'virginity testing' and hymenoplasty and recommended that they be banned. The report also recommended further research and improved education to support the eradication of these practices.

The Governance and Administration Committee is accepting submissions on the Bill until 9 September.

The Helen Clark Foundation's Submission:

• outlined the serious harm caused by these practices, and their lack of scientific validity;
• highlighted the United Nations' recommended three-pronged approach to eliminating the practices
• recommended that the Bill be passed following Select Committee consideration; and
• recommended that legislative change be accompanied by sustained investment in education.
